Senior Commercial Manager

The Senior Commercial Manager will manage the surveying team and provide the commercial lead to deliver the commercial management functions of the business. This will include, but not be limited to, managing the commercial transactions, the reporting, the cash flow management and the management of the contractual relationships and the risk management of the business; ensuring that at all times the company policies and procedures, including the Delegation of Authority approved levels are followed.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


The Senior Commercial Manager will provide the commercial lead in delivering both company and project commercial transactions, reporting, risk management and cash flow management across the business. The role will include, but will not be limited to;

  • Taking over the commercial documentation and the commercial relationship from the bid team on new projects
  • Working with the planning team to ensure the integration of the delivery of commercial management within agreed project parameters
  • Developing and agreeing with the finance team the project cash flow based on the project plan
  • Overseeing the appointment including signing off procurement approval of the delivery team in line with the project plan and the cashflow programme
  • Overseeing the application and processing for interim payments in line with the cashflow plan
  • Overseeing the payment of the supply chain
  • Overseeing the preparation and the reporting from CVR reports in accordance with the company management report timetable
  • Overseeing project re-measurement including the capture and evaluation of project variations
  • Overseeing the completion of contract close out documentation including the final account.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of management procedures, including risk management registers on all projects
  • Providing line management for the quantity surveying staff including their training and development needs
  • Managing the production of monthly cost/value reports
  • Managing the resolution of contractual disputes

The Senior Commercial Manager will have the following qualification or equivalent

  • A BSc in Quantity surveying or third level qualification in the construction industry with 5 years surveying experience at a senior level or qualification through by experience (7 years) working at a quantity surveyor at a senior level
  • Experience in leading a commercial team
  • Experience in commercial reporting into a Board of Directors
  • Experience in managing ADR processes
  • Knowledge of procurement processes
  • A CSR card – level black
  • A good working knowledge of construction and engineering processes
  • A good working knowledge of construction and engineering contracts


The Senior Commercial Manager will have a skill base that will include;

  • IT proficient – Microsoft packages
  • Experience in working with an industry project accounts software package e.g. COINS, REDSKY etc.
  • Experience in industry management software packages e.g. FOUR PROJECTS – ASTA PowerProject planning software
  • Be strong in verbal and written communication skills
  • Be a team leader with motivational and empathy skills


Preferred Qualifications and Skills

The Senior Commercial Manager will have, or be encouraged to work towards developing the following qualifications and skills;

  • Chartered membership of the RICS (or equivalent)
  • A recognised relevant leadership qualification
  • Demonstrable experience of leading through a change management process
