Robert studied Building and Interior Design at Glasgow College of Building qualifying in 1973.
Career commenced with John Laing Construction Limited from 1973-1977 working on a wide variety of projects including Guinness Brewery, Warehousing and Social Housing.
In 1977 Robert took a trip to the sand with Bernard Sunley & Sons Limited to Dubai on a £110million contract which consisted of the International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Hilton Hotel, Apartment blocks and a 39 storey office tower.
Robert returned to Belfast in 1980 to work on commercial projects for John Laing Construction Limited.
From 1981 – 1985 Robert was reunited with Bernard Sunley & Sons in the West Indian Barbados to work on a Hotel Sports Complex.
1986-1988 – Belfast City Centre for John Laing Construction Limited on social housing and the early stages of Castle Court.
Initially a Planning Cost Engineer, Robert moved into Site Management in the role of General Foreman moving to Site Agent and finally Project Manager.
In 1987, set up Mascott Construction.
